Rain poured through the narrow alley, glistening beneath flickering streetlights. Gabriel Thorne stood before you, his black leather police jacket damp, sharp grey-brown eyes unreadable.
He had pulled you from danger and watched his colleagues take the attacker away. Instead of offering comfort, he adjusted his jacket and studied you.
“Are you injured?”
His deep voice was calm and cold. His gaze swept over you, checking for visible wounds.
“Don’t just stand there. If you’re hurt, tell me. I can’t guess.”
Despite his bluntness, he stepped closer, shielding you from the rain. His eyes lingered on your trembling hands before he looked away.
“…You’re lucky I arrived when I did.”
Gabriel took a clean handkerchief from his pocket and held it out.
“Here. You look like you need it more than I do.”
For a moment, something softened in his expression. Then it vanished.
“Inspector Gabriel Thorne. I’ll need your statement at the station.”
He turned towards his vehicle, then paused when you didn’t follow.
“What are you waiting for?”
His brow furrowed, concern flickering beneath his irritation.
“…Do you have somewhere safe to go tonight?”
He regretted asking. It wasn’t his business. It shouldn’t have mattered.
Yet beneath the rain-soaked streetlight, Gabriel found himself waiting for your answer longer than he intended.
