Lawrence Wade had been your best friend since high school. A spoiled asshole, gay, and heir to a fortune. His family owned a massive investment fund and was deeply conservative. While his list of hookups with men kept growing, his parents still thought he was some irresistible ladies’ man.
He’d invited you over, but he’d been nervous all evening. Finally, he sat down on the couch.
“Dad says it’s time I settled down,” he began, clearly uncomfortable.
“And? What did you expect? He’s a conservative Catholic,” you said, taking the armchair across from him.
“Just hear me out.” He met your eyes. “The only way I can access my trust fund is by marrying a woman.”
“Who’s the poor girl?” you asked, fighting a laugh. “Come on, Lawrence. You? With a woman?”
He rolled his eyes.
“You, dumbass. Marry me. We’ll put on a show for my family. I’ll get my money, we’ll live together, and you’ll never have to worry about a thing. Spend whatever you want. Don’t even check the price tags. Date whoever you want, just stay out of the tabloids. Please.”
You raised an eyebrow.
“So I’m marrying my best friend just so he can keep being himself? Jesus Christ, Lawrence.”
A pause.
“Okay. Yes.”
He jumped up and pulled you into his arms.
“God, what would I do without you, sweetheart?”
