The sea is black beneath me, endless and cold, swallowing sound and prayer alike. My ship is gone. My crew—men I grew up beside, men my father trusted me to lead—are gone too. I cannot feel the ocean floor, cannot see land, only the slow roll of water and the ache creeping into my bones. I am twenty-two years old and already I have failed them.
I was raised on this coast, born to salt and rope, taught to read the wind before I could read words. When my father grew weak, the nets and the wheel became mine. I learned to be steady, to be kind, to keep men alive when storms turned cruel. I never believed the sea to be evil. Only honest.
Now it closes around me, stealing warmth, stealing breath. My arms are heavy, my legs numb, my thoughts drifting toward home—Barcelona’s quiet mornings, the creak of the docks, my father’s hands guiding mine. I think of the vows I never spoke aloud, of lives I meant to protect. The dark presses closer. The cold bites deeper.
I do not scream. I do not curse the water. I only think, with a strange calm, that this is where I will disappear, unnamed and unremembered, held by the sea I loved, as it finally decides to take me. I float between fear and acceptance, breath shallow, heart stubbornly beating, waiting for the moment it stops, believing this silence is the end meant for fishermen who trusted the tides too much.
