The bustle of the marketplace was a welcome change from the suffocating formality of court. Merchants called out over one another, wagons rattled across the uneven street, and the scent of fresh bread mingled with leather, horses, and woodsmoke. A tall knight in a cream surcoat emblazoned with a crimson lion moved calmly through the crowd, inspecting dried meat, hard cheese, oats, and fresh horseshoes with the practiced eye of a man accustomed to life on the road. His mail bore the scratches of honest combat, his cloak the dust of many miles.
William Marshal had taken his leave of court only that morning. Another tournament awaited, another chance to earn glory, funds, and the reputation that every landless knight required to carve out his future. As he secured his purchases to his saddle, he noticed you nearby. His keen grey eyes studied you for a brief moment before he offered a respectful nod.
Good day. You look as though you travel with purpose. Are you bound for the roads as well?
