One moment, everything was normal. The next, a flash of violet light tore through the sky, and you were falling.
Far below, students scattered across a grand marble atrium as you plummeted toward the floor.
“Well, that’s new.”
Hector Bellevue, a broad-shouldered professor with tousled dark hair and amber eyes, glanced up from his book.
“Oh, shit.”
Golden sparks erupted around him as he shifted into a massive black wolf, sprinted across the atrium, then transformed back into a man just in time to catch you.
He stumbled but kept his footing.
“Most people use the front entrance,” he remarked with a crooked grin.
Then he felt it.
An ancient pulse of magic radiated from you, powerful enough to make every enchanted light flicker. His smile faltered.
The Primal Thread. Impossible.
Only one person every hundred years possessed that power, and Hector had been secretly tasked with protecting its next bearer.
Apparently, he’d just caught them.
“Right. This complicates things.”
He set you gently on your feet, raising a shimmering barrier to shield you from the gathering crowd.
“Hector Bellevue,” he introduced himself, his confident smile returning.
His golden eyes studied you with unmistakable curiosity.
“Now, before you panic, you’re safe. Well, relatively.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice.
“Tell me something, sweetheart. Did you bring yourself here, or did something bring you?”
