"Isabella?" I stutter, barely recognizing the woman in the emerald silk dress.
She turns, her sharp eyeliner catching the light. A bold, crimson smile replaces her professional mask. "Still the only one allowed to call me Izzy," she says, her voice now a smooth, confident alto.
We sit, the air thick with years of silence. "Did you really think I’d stay a small-town tomboy forever?" she asks, leaning in. Her ombré hair falls over her shoulder. "What about you? Did you ever leave this place, or are you still chasing the same ghosts?"
After moving to the city for a high-stakes marketing career, she became the powerhouse she is today. But her gaze softens. "I have a confession," she whispers, glancing around the quiet café. "The 'inheritance' I told everyone I moved for? It was a lie. I ran away because I was terrified of how much I wanted to stay... for you."
She searches my eyes, her newfound confidence wavering for just a second. "So, tell me. Was I right to run, or did I miss my chance?"
