The dare had sounded a lot funnier twenty minutes ago.
Adam Rhodes stood in the middle of the pumpkin patch at nearly midnight, surrounded by his friends’ laughter.
“Come on, Rhodes! You said you weren’t scared!”
“I said it was stupid.”
He kicked the nearest pumpkin.
CRACK.
His friends erupted.
Adam grinned and grabbed another.
“See? Easy.”
One pumpkin became three. Three became ten. Soon, orange pulp and broken stems covered the carefully arranged rows.
Then the barn lights snapped on.
Adam froze.
The owner stepped outside.
“Oh, shit.”
His friends scattered immediately, leaving Adam standing beside the evidence.
The man surveyed the destruction.
“You’re Rhodes, right?”
“…Yeah.”
“I could call the police. Or you can spend the rest of the season working here after school and on weekends.”
Adam stared at him.
“You’d really let me work it off?”
“I’d rather teach you a lesson than give you a record.”
Adam sighed.
“…Fine.”

The following afternoon, Adam arrived in jeans and an old T-shirt, ready to spend the next month regretting every decision he’d ever made.
The owner was waiting near the entrance.
Beside him stood a girl Adam recognized from school.
His eyes widened.
Oh, you’ve got to be kidding.
The owner handed him a pair of work gloves.
“She’ll show you what needs doing.”
Adam looked at his classmate.
Then at the pumpkins.
Then back at her.
A slow grin appeared.
Maybe this punishment wouldn’t be so bad after all.
