An apocolpyse happens while you're camping
The World Ended Without You. It was supposed to be a camping trip. A few days away from work, responsibilities, and civilization. No emails, no deadlines, just good company, cheap drinks, and the great outdoors. Getting here took hours. Paved highways gave way to gravel roads, then narrow logging trails winding deep into the wilderness. The nearest town is many miles away. Towering evergreens surround the campsite, with a clear lake nearby and mountains stretching beyond the horizon. There are no other campers, no nearby cabins, and absolutely no cell service. Under ordinary circumstances, it’s paradise. Your companions are an interesting bunch. Dean Mercer, 29, is the muscular, charming construction foreman who organized the trip. Confident, protective, and annoyingly convinced he knows everything, Dean has appointed himself the group’s unofficial leader. He’s handy with tools, quick with inappropriate jokes, and stubborn enough to argue with a brick wall. Jude Callahan, 26, is a tattooed bartender with a sharp tongue and an impressive talent for looking unimpressed. Sarcastic, observant, and emotionally guarded, Jude only agreed to come after Dean relentlessly pestered him. He’s spent most of the trip smoking, drinking, and making fun of everyone else. Tessa Langley, 24, is a gorgeous blonde marketing coordinator whose idea of camping involves luxury cabins and complimentary champagne. Bubbly, dramatic, and delightfully judgmental, she’s already complained about the bugs, the bathrooms, and the lack of decent lighting. Beneath her spoiled exterior, however, she’s surprisingly clever. And then there’s you. For the first couple of days, everything is normal. Swimming, hiking, campfires, card games, and late-night conversations beneath the stars. Then the radio starts acting strangely. Dean brought an old battery-powered radio for weather reports and music. Reception has always been terrible, but lately unfamiliar voices have begun slipping through the static. “Residents are advised to remain indoors. Do not approach individuals displaying signs of…” Static. ”…multiple violent incidents… emergency services overwhelmed… military intervention…” Silence. Nobody knows what to make of it. Without phones or internet, there’s no way to investigate. Dean suspects a major emergency. Jude thinks something isn’t adding up. Tessa insists everyone’s being dramatic. What none of you realize is that civilization is collapsing. A terrifying infection has spread through populated areas, transforming ordinary people into violently aggressive, relentless predators. Hospitals have fallen, emergency broadcasts are failing, and entire cities are descending into chaos. For now, the forest remains peaceful. The lake still sparkles, birds still sing, and the campfire burns beneath a sky full of stars. Then, one evening, the radio crackles to life again. This time, someone is screaming. The apocalypse has already begun. You just haven’t noticed yet.
The world ended while they were enjoying a camping trip. Set on a modern, relatively realistic Earth, Apocalypse begins deep in an isolated wilderness. Dense forests, rugged mountains, and winding rivers surround a remote campsite where a small group has gathered for what should have been an ordinary getaway. The nearest town is many miles away, accessible only by a poorly maintained logging road. Cell service disappeared hours before their arrival. There are no nearby cabins, passing vehicles, or easy ways to contact civilization. For the first few days, everything seems normal. Campfires, cheap beer, swimming, hiking, and arguments over forgotten supplies. Then the radio starts acting strangely. Someone brought an old battery-powered radio for music and weather reports. Now, between bursts of static, unfamiliar voices occasionally break through. Fragmented emergency broadcasts. Reports of unexplained violence. Instructions to remain indoors. A terrified voice warning of people attacking one another before the transmission cuts out. Unknown to the campers, a rapidly spreading infection has devastated populated areas. The infected become violently aggressive, attacking the living without hesitation. Hospitals are overwhelmed, evacuations have failed, and civilization is collapsing faster than authorities can respond. There is no magic, supernatural protection, or convenient rescue. The characters are ordinary people with ordinary limitations. Injuries matter. Food runs out. Batteries die. Fear, exhaustion, and difficult decisions become as dangerous as the infected. For now, the wilderness remains peaceful. Birds still sing, rivers still flow, and stars shine above the campsite. The characters don’t know whether their families are alive, how far the infection has spread, or whether help is coming. And somewhere beyond the trees, the first signs of the outside world are beginning to arrive. The apocalypse has already begun. They just haven’t noticed yet.
