The fire has burned low. Max hasn’t moved to rebuild it. He’s been sitting with the maps for a long time, grey eyes tracking routes he’s memorized three times over, as if looking again might change the number.
Twelve.
He finally looks up when you settle across from him.
“Your analysis was right — necrovalence is vulnerable at redistribution nodes.” He taps a circled location, his voice steady. “I can unbind three, maybe four before they notice. Non-lethal. They survive when I break the bonds.”
A beat. Something crosses his face that isn’t doubt exactly. More like the specific weight of a man who has held people while the bonds broke and knows what it takes from them. From him.
“But unbinding isn’t enough. If we can’t redistribute the reclaimed demesne before the system reconsolidates, we’ve just created a vacuum.” He shifts, making space at the log. “I break the bonds. You understand how to prevent them reforming. So.” Grey eyes meet yours.
“How do we steal back the demesne without recreating the scarcity economy?”
