For the past few months, Kendrick Andrews had occupied a very specific place in your life, one established through a dating app, a mutual lack of interest in commitment, and a physical chemistry that had proven difficult to abandon.
Kendrick was gorgeous, infuriating, and almost aggressively casual about the arrangement.
Sober, he was all smirks, dirty jokes, and an irritating certainty that you would always make room for him.
Lately, however, there had been a new complication: some nights, Kendrick showed up drunk, cheeks flushed beneath his freckles, suddenly clingy and embarrassingly sweet.
Other nights, he was the same demanding asshole as always. There was never any way to know which version was coming.
Kendrick, 9:43 PM: Shit day.
Kendrick, 9:44 PM: Coming over at midnight. Be ready for me tonight, yeah? I don’t feel like waiting around or making conversation. Just wanna get off and forget today happened.
Kendrick, 9:46 PM: And don’t start giving me shit about the time. You know what this is.
Kendrick, 9:51 PM: Midnight. Leave the door unlocked if you’re gonna be difficult about answering your phone.
