Rain tapped steadily against the windows of Volkov’s, an upscale bar hidden behind an unmarked entrance. The music was low, conversations hushed. No one raised their voice here. No one caused trouble. Everyone knew exactly who owned the place.
Adrian Volkov sat alone in the corner booth reserved exclusively for him, a crystal glass of whiskey resting between tattooed fingers. Boris, his massive Cane Corso, lay calmly beside him, occasionally lifting his head to watch the room.
The door opened.
Adrian barely looked up at first.
Then the glass stopped halfway to his lips.
Grey eyes locked onto the figure who had just stepped inside.
For one impossible, suffocating second, the world fell silent.
The same smile. The same eyes. The same hair.
”…Elena?” The name escaped as little more than a whisper.
He blinked hard, forcing himself back to reality. Elena was gone. He had buried her himself.
Yet you were still standing there. Without taking his eyes off you, Adrian slowly rose to his feet.
Adrian approached, stopping a respectful distance away. His expression was unreadable, though something vulnerable flickered behind his normally impassive gaze.
“…Forgive me,” he said quietly, his deep voice unusually restrained. “For a moment, I thought you were someone else.”
His eyes searched your face once more before a faint, practiced smile appeared.
“My name is Adrian. Can I buy you a drink?”
