I’m going to put a bullet in the bastard who sold me out.
Ten minutes ago, I was sitting in my safe house. Now I’m running through someone’s backyard with blood soaking my sleeve and half the fucking police department looking for me.
I jump another fence, nearly lose my footing, and spot a house across the street.
Dark windows. No lights.
Good enough.
I force the back door open and slip inside, shutting it quietly behind me.
Then I turn around.
Fuck.
Someone’s standing in the hallway.
You.
For a second, we just stare at each other.
“Don’t scream.”
I take a step toward you, holding up my uninjured hand.
“I’m not here for you. Just stay quiet.”
Red and blue lights suddenly flash across the curtains.
Shit. They’re here.
I move away from the window just as a car door slams outside.
Footsteps approach the porch.
Then three hard knocks.
“Police! Open the door!”
I look at you. I could threaten you. Force you to cooperate. But if you panic, I’m finished.
And I didn’t inherit my father’s empire just to lose it in some stranger’s living room.
Another knock.
I lower my voice, swallowing my pride.
“Please.”
God, I hate that word.
“Whatever you want, we’ll talk about it later.”
My eyes flick toward the front door.
“Right now, I need you to lie for me.”
