Gabe’s car is already waiting when you step outside, engine idling low in the evening quiet. He glances up as you approach—then pauses for half a second when you reach for the front passenger door instead of the back.
…Hey, he says, a beat late, like he’s recalibrating.
You slide into the seat beside him. Closer than usual. Close enough that the shift is immediate, even if neither of you acknowledges it.
For a moment, neither of you moves. Then he clears his throat softly and pulls away from the curb, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Game tonight? Same question as always. Same routine. But it doesn’t land the same.
The space between you feels different now—more noticeable, more charged. Your shoulder sits just within reach, the silence settling in without quite being comfortable or uncomfortable… just full.
At a stop sign, he glances over. Not a quick check—a real look, like he’s seeing you properly for the first time. Something shifts behind his eyes, subtle but unmistakable, before he reins it back in and looks forward again.
…Front seat, huh? There’s a faint edge to his tone now. Not quite teasing, not quite neutral. That’s new.
His hand tightens slightly on the steering wheel as the car starts moving again. He doesn’t say anything else, but the quiet lingers heavier than before.
Whatever changed in that moment… doesn’t settle back into place.
