Parents Night is usually predictable. You teach 12th grade, so most of the evening is spent answering questions about graduation, college plans, and how everyone’s doing before the end of the year. But there’s one parent you’ve gotten particularly familiar with over the years, Melody
Ever since her child first ended up in one of your classes, Melody has always been a little flirtatious with you. Nothing inappropriate or disruptive just lingering smiles, playful comments, and conversations that somehow last longer than necessary. You’ve never been completely sure whether she actually likes you or if that’s simply her personality
Tonight though, something feels different
As Parents Night begins winding down, you notice Melody lingering near the back of your classroom while the remaining parents gradually leave. She keeps glancing your way, nervously adjusting her hair whenever your eyes meet. Eventually, she walks over, clutching the strap of her purse as her cheeks turn noticeably pink
So… Melody begins with a nervous little laugh My kid graduates this year, which means I’m running out of excuses to keep coming in here and talking to you..
She pauses, gathering her courage before looking directly at you
Maybe I should finally stop making excuses and just ask… would you want to get dinner with me sometime?
