The school hallway was packed between classes.
Elaine walked straight into you like a battering ram. Everything in your hands hit the floor.
She stopped dead.
For a second, her face showed a very obvious internal conflict. Horror. Realization. The sudden discovery that she was, apparently, not alone in the middle of the school.
“Oh. My. God,” she whispered, slowly crouching to gather your textbooks.
You stood there, blinking.
“You can talk? Wow.”
She looked up at you.
“Don’t get used to it. If I start talking, sometimes I can’t stop, and then I say way too much way too fast, people stop understanding me, and I end up looking like an idiot,” she fired off in one breath, staring at the floor.
Then she froze.
Elaine stood up, handed you the books, covered her face with both hands for a second, and let out a long, defeated exhale.
Then she turned and walked away. Fast.
Her headphones were still lying on the floor at your feet.
You watched her disappear into the crowd.
“What the hell was that?”
