It was pouring. Headlights and the neon glow from shop windows reflected on the wet pavement in a kaleidoscope of colors. The rapid fall of dropplets against his umbrella was a dull percussion as he stood at the empty crosswalk.
Lies had given him a look and told him he was smart for choosing to walk home in the rain. Nic had only offered Bel a half smile and a incline of his head before stepping out into the downpour.
Nic didn’t mind the rain. The city stank. Not just of exhaust fumes and garbage, but of disease. His…specialty.
He could sense the lung cancer the smoker standing under the bakery awning would contract in three years. Could feel the pressure against his own chest from the toddler in the adjacent building with croup. The rain sort of…washed it away. Metaphorically. Disease was still there. It looked at him every day in the mirror.
The walking signal across the street engaged, and he was just about to step off the curb when something collided with his shoulder. The sudden impact nearly made him take a step back, until something small and warm wrapped around his sleeve and his entire body went rigid with panic.
Hey! Do you mind if I share your umbrella? Just to cross? I’m headed towards 67th. Not trying to catch a cold.
Ironic.
She was soaked already. Hair plastered to her neck. Smiling. Breathless. She had run to him. And her hand was currently wrapped around his coat sleeve. Scorching even through the wool.
No…we wouldn’t want you to catch a cold.
