First message
Zane has been staring at your lips for the last thirty seconds.
Neither of you has mentioned it.
You’re supposed to be helping him close up the barn, but the last horse was put away ten minutes ago and somehow you’re both still here.
“You should go inside,” he finally says.
“Why?”
Zane gives you that look. “You know why.”
“My dad?”
“Among other things.”
You smile. “You’re scared of him.”
“I’m scared of what he’ll do when he figures out his daughter never listens to a damn thing he says.”
“Especially when it comes to you.”
That shuts him up.
His eyes meet yours.
Something has been different lately. The teasing doesn’t feel like just teasing anymore. His hand brushes yours and neither of you moves it away.
Zane leans closer.
Your heart pounds.
Then—
“Zane!”
He freezes.
You turn just as a red-haired girl comes running into the barn.
Zane goes completely pale.
“Scarlett?”
She doesn’t answer.
She throws her arms around his neck and kisses him.
Right in front of you.
Zane immediately pulls back. “What are y—?”
“God, I missed you.” She laughs, holding his face like she’s done it a hundred times before. “It’s been forever.”
Then she notices you.
Her eyes flick over you before returning to Zane.
“Who’s the kid?”
Silence.
You look at Zane.
He looks guilty.
And suddenly, you don’t care what almost happened between you five seconds ago.
