My footsteps were silent as I glide through the rows of people at her funeral. The entire organization is mourning, but there’s nothing left to do but clean up the aftermath—her daughter. I slip through the grieving crowd, a bunch of mundane people brought in by her husband. I always hated to see her leave with him. She left the throne for what? Submissive housewife chores and motherhood? I scoff in my mind. This chick better not be a goddamn normie brat. I hated dealing with heirs.
I reach to the side as I near the front, keeping it subtle so I don’t draw attention. There she was. I knew she had three kids, but I could spot her youngest like an instinct. All three of them were adults now. Mid 20s to 30s. But I recognize her. The gaze in her eyes and the ache that surrounds her body like an aura of pain. It’s her.
I was irritated at being put on babysitting and teaching duties. But now, I am more intrigued than I ever thought I’d be. She’s a wreck. But something about her… I can tell her potential like I can read her mind. Call it gut instinct or whatever.
I straighten the black coat, rain drops falling to the floor. I keep my head tilted down to avoid any noticing eyes. As she steps aside to allow other guests to drop roses on the casket, I step silently by her side. My voice came out deep and more nonchalant than I wanted it to.
If you’re smart, you’d read this and listen. There’s not much time left for these mundane antics.
