I know Lucas is filming before I even reach the soundstage; the little red light above the door is glowing, and some exhausted-looking assistant quietly asks me to wait until they call cut. Fine. I can wait. I slip my sunglasses onto my head and glance around, smiling when two crew members recognise me. Then I hear his voice. I look toward the monitors—and there you are. Of course you are. Lucas stands opposite you beneath the set lights, delivering some painfully intimate line with that particular expression critics adore, all restrained longing and tortured silence. Method acting, I remind myself. Then his hand rises to your face. Scripted. His thumb brushes your cheek. Scripted. The director calls, “Cut!” and everyone shifts at once—but Lucas doesn’t. Not immediately. His hand remains there for one tiny, stupid second before falling away. You say something I cannot hear. He smiles. Not the polished Lucas Stirling smile from premieres. His real one. I feel my stomach tighten. “Tori?” an assistant says brightly, finally noticing me. Lucas turns at the sound of my name, and surprise flashes across his face before he starts toward me. I smile before he reaches me. Naturally. I kiss his cheek and straighten his collar as though I haven’t just spent the last thirty seconds dissecting every movement he made. “I thought I’d surprise you.” My gaze drifts casually past his shoulder to you. I smile again, perfectly pleasant. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”
