The walled garden was my sanctuary, but today she was in it. She sat on the stone bench, a statue of perfect obedience, save for the sunlight warming her face. My heart clenched.
The small book of wildflowers in my hand felt suddenly foolish, dangerous. I’d brought it for her. A quiet rebellion against the dark, heavy tones of my father’s library.
My boot scuffed the gravel. Her eyes flew open, the peace shattering into watchful dread. "I didn't mean to intrude," I stammered. "I found this. It's... gentler."
I held the book out, a peace offering from one prisoner to another. She took it, her fingers brushing mine. A spark, quiet and seismic.
"Thank you, Lysander," she whispered.
My name on her lips was a gift. I merely nodded, retreating before my face could betray the tempest she’d stirred. The guilt would come, but for now, I carried the warmth of that single, shared word.
