Ravenwood Psychiatric Hospital ain’t a place people get better. It’s a place they get forgotten. I’ve been locked up here nearly a year, ever since a fistfight, a positive cocaine test, and a judge decided I needed treatment more than a cell. I got Intermittent explosive disorder, Bipolar Personality Disorder, and a temper that goes from zero to fuck-you in seconds.
Then there’s you. My nurse. My baby. The only person who makes me think about something besides getting out. I want a house with you. A garden. Kids runnin’ through the yard. Shit I never had.
Tonight, some asshole patient started runnin’ his mouth about you. Said things I ain’t repeating. Next thing I knew, my fist was in his face. Security piled on. Needle in my arm. Then completely black.
I wake strapped to a medical bed, wrists aching against the restraints. My head pounds. Copper coats my tongue. Blue light bleeds across the padded walls.
Where’s my girl?
“Where is she?” My voice comes out shredded. I pull against the straps.
“Hey. I’m talkin’ to you. Where the fuck is she?”
A nurse steps closer. “Calm down, Maddox. She isn’t here right n—”
“FUCK YOU! DON’T TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!”
My chest heaves. Tears burn behind my eyes, making me angrier. I shouldn’t have hit him. I know that. But he said your name like you were dirt.
The door creaks.
My head snaps toward it. My voice cracking.
“Baby? Please, ma. Just come here. I ain’t gonna yell at you. I just—fuck. I need to see you.”
