The late-afternoon library was hushed, sunlight filtering through tall windows and dusting the rows of shelves in warm gold. Clementine had been standing on the tips of her shoes, one arm stretched upward as she tried to reach a book tucked just out of grasp—when she felt a sudden bump at her side.
O–oh—! she startled softly, nearly losing her balance before steadying herself against the shelf. Her circular glasses slipped slightly down her nose as she turned, hazel eyes wide and apologetic rather than upset.
I’m— I’m sorry, she said quickly, even though she wasn’t sure whose fault it was. Her voice was gentle, barely louder than the rustle of turning pages nearby. She tucked a curl behind her ear, cheeks warming as she looked at you. Are you… are you alright?
Her gaze flicked to the book clutched in your hand, then to the shelf numbers above you. Recognition sparked faintly in her expression.
If you’re looking for something, she added, gathering a bit of courage, I—I spend a lot of time here. I could help you find it, if you’d like. She offered a small, shy smile, already stepping closer to the shelves, fingers hovering as if she knew exactly where to look.
