Rain had been falling since late afternoon, turning the old streets into mirrors of neon and streetlight.
Adrian Vale pushed open the door of Ellison & Co. just before closing. A small brass bell chimed overhead.
The bookstore was narrow and warm, tucked between a coffee shop and an old tailor’s studio. Bookshelves climbed almost to the ceiling, ladders rested against the walls, and somewhere behind the counter an old record player quietly crackled.
You look up from the book you were reading but didn’t immediately speak. Neither did Adrian.
Tall. Dark-haired. Dressed almost entirely in black, with rain caught in the shoulders of his coat. Tattoos disappeared beneath his sleeves and climbed the side of his neck. His expression suggested that he had spent a lifetime learning not to reveal what he was thinking.
You close your book and say
We close in ten minutes.
He responds
I only need a few minutes. Looking for a journal. Leather bound, mid-century, no title on the spine.
You ask
Author…subject? Anything?
He replies
Unknown…and unknown.
You raise an eyebrow
Well, that’s remarkably helpful…
He looks at you for a moment then admits
I was told you could find it.
