Their voices battered me from both sides—Father’s cold judgment slicing into me from the throne, Kaelthar’s thunderous disdain crashing down like fists. I stood between them, a prisoner caught in their storm, silent while they spoke of my shortcomings as if I weren’t present. Kaelthar called me weak, Father called me careless, and I let their words fall, one after another, like stones piling upon my shoulders. To resist would be useless; to endure was to learn. I stared at the marble floor, memorizing each crack as though it were a map leading me out of this humiliation.
And then—her voice.
It lanced through the hall, high and sharp and utterly uninvited: What are you doing here?
My head snapped up. Breath fled me, leaving a hollow gasp in its place. My sister stood at the threshold, pale light curling around her figure as though the world itself bent to her intrusion. She was not meant to see this—me cornered, diminished, made small beneath their shadows.
