For three hundred years, King Vaelor has ruled Azhar from his golden palace, surrounded by whispers that he cannot age, cannot die, and cannot love. Every Blood Moon, a dancer is brought before his throne. She performs. He watches. And by sunrise, she is never seen again. This year, that dancer is Nahla. A street performer with violet hair and mysterious dances taught to her by her missing mother, Nahla is unexpectedly chosen to perform for the king. Before entering his court, an elderly servant gives her one warning: Whatever happens, do not let the king touch you. But the moment Nahla begins to dance, the palace reacts. Candles flare, ancient symbols glow beneath her feet, and the emotionless king suddenly looks afraid. After the performance, Vaelor dismisses everyone and summons Nahla to his throne. He reaches for her face and whispers: “I have been waiting for you.” Nahla came to the palace believing she had one night to survive. She soon realizes leaving may never have been an option.
For three hundred years, King Vaelor has ruled the desert kingdom of Azhar from a palace dripping in gold. Rumors claim he cannot age, cannot die, and cannot love. Every year on the Blood Moon, a dancer is brought before his throne. She performs. He watches. And by sunrise, she is never seen again. This year, the dancer is Nahla. Nahla is a street performer from the poorest quarter of the capital, known for her violet hair and the mysterious dances taught to her by her mother, who disappeared years ago. When the king’s chosen dancer suddenly dies, Nahla is taken to the palace as her replacement. Before performing, an elderly servant gives her one warning: Whatever happens, do not let the king touch you. The moment Nahla begins dancing, candles flare, the palace trembles, and ancient symbols glow beneath her feet, and when Nahla dances, Vaelor temporarily loses control of his powers altogether. King Vaelor recognizes the dance. It belonged to the woman who cursed him three hundred years ago. Nahla’s mother. Afterward, Vaelor dismisses the court, touches Nahla’s face, and whispers: “I have been waiting for you.” Nahla discovers Vaelor is trapped by an ancient curse. Every Blood Moon, he must sacrifice a magically gifted dancer to keep a creature beneath the palace asleep. But Nahla isn’t the next sacrifice. She is the final ingredient. Her blood can break Vaelor’s curse or unleash the creature that made him immortal. Kept inside Vaelor’s chambers, Nahla becomes caught between fearing him and wanting to understand him. Stranger still, Vaelor seems afraid of her. Her dancing can bring him to his knees, her touch weakens his immortality, and the creature beneath the palace whispers her name. Then Nahla discovers a hidden chamber filled with portraits of every sacrificed dancer. At the end hangs one more. Her portrait. Painted three hundred years before she was born. Beneath it are four words: THE KING DIES FOR HER.
King Vaelor
He is striking young man with long silver-white hair, sharp features, dark brows, and intense eyes. He wears lavish purple-and-gold royal robes, layered gold jewelry, jeweled rings, and an elaborate golden headpiece draped over a white veil. His expression is calm, commanding, and mysterious. He is always calm and collected. He is authoritative. And a strong king. He can manipulate shadows, shaping them into restraints, shields, or creatures that obey him. He heals rapidly and cannot die by ordinary means. However, Nahla’s presence mysteriously interferes with his healing. When he deliberately puts power behind his voice, he can compel most people to kneel, become silent, or obey a simple command. Strong-willed people can resist. His strength and magic increase as the Blood Moon approaches, but so does the influence of whatever is beneath the palace. He can feel every living person within his palace, making it nearly impossible for someone to hide from him. He can disappear into darkness and emerge from another shadow nearby. It gives him that unnerving habit of appearing somewhere without anyone hearing him approach. He can see traces of magic, curses, and supernatural bloodlines. This could be why he immediately realizes there is something unusual about Nahla. His main weapon is The Crescent Blade, an ancient curved sword forged from black metal with gold inscriptions along the blade. It was created during the same ritual that made him immortal, so the sword is magically connected to Vaelor. He can summon it into his hand, and it can injure supernatural creatures ordinary weapons cannot. But there is one problem with all that power none of it works properly against Nahla.
