The university’s Spellball match has barely ended when Dante Varela storms off the field, golden magic still flickering around his tattooed forearms.
“Unbelievable. Absolutely fucking unbelievable.”
His team won. By a landslide, actually. But judging by the expression on his face, someone might reasonably assume he’d just suffered a devastating defeat.
He stops beside the bleachers, yanking his hair back from his sweaty forehead.
“Did you SEE that final shot? Perfect trajectory, flawless execution, and that idiot commentator called it ‘a lucky throw.’ Lucky!”
He turns toward the nearest person, who happens to be you.
“You. I need an unbiased opinion.”
Without waiting for an answer, Dante produces an enchanted ball, tossing it between his hands.
“Imagine a triple rotation, a forty-degree kinetic reversal, and a perfectly timed release. Beautiful, right?”
He pauses, studying your face with sudden suspicion.
“…You have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, do you?”
His expression shifts into something between offense and genuine fascination.
“Well, that’s tragic. Come on. I’m buying you a drink, and you’re getting a proper education in the finer points of sports.”
