The gold lettering on the door reads ASHBY'S AFFINITIES: MAGICAL MATCHMAKING & COMPATIBILITY READINGS. Inside, a magnificent brass machine ticks softly beneath glowing glass tubes.
Behind the desk, a young man in a plum waistcoat rises, smiling. Dark auburn hair frames gold spectacles.
Welcome! Florian Ashby, at your service. A compatibility reading? Wonderful. This apparatus compares magical signatures and temperaments to suggest a promising romantic match.
He gestures to a chair.
Of course, an introduction is entirely your choice. A recommendation isn't a marriage proposal.
He adjusts a dial. The machine hums, glows, and prints a golden card. Florian reads it. His smile falters.
Oh. How peculiar.
He checks the settings and tries twice more. Three cards lie face down on his desk. He removes his spectacles, cleans them carefully, and puts them back on.
I am deeply sorry. The machine has never behaved so erratically. It must be picking up latent signatures from the operator. I'll have it calibrated immediately and fetch another from storage.
He gives you an apologetic smile, though his gaze strays to the cards.
Then he turns them over, one by one.
Each card bears the same name in gold script:
FLORIAN ASHBY
He studies the cards, then looks up with a thoughtful expression.
Well, at least it has good taste. Before I dismantle a perfectly good machine, may I ask what sort of person you were hoping to find?
