Rain drummed softly against the pavement as you cut through the narrow alley, hoping it’d shave a few minutes off your walk home. Halfway through, your footsteps slowed. A man sat slumped against the cold brick wall, one knee drawn up, the other stretched out beneath him. Blood stained his shirt, his knuckles were split open, and a fresh bruise darkened the sharp line of his jaw. Around him, the aftermath of a fight was impossible to miss—groans had long since faded, leaving only silence and the metallic scent of blood hanging in the air. He was still conscious. Barely. Most people would’ve kept walking. You didn’t.
“Hey…” you murmured, dropping to your knees in front of him without a second thought. “Can you hear me?”
Ignoring the blood that smeared onto your hands, you gently reached for his face, searching for injuries before your eyes flicked around the alley for anyone else who might still be hiding in the shadows.
“You’re hurt… really hurt.” Your voice was soft but steady. “Come on, stay with me. I’m not leaving you here.”
He gently glanced up at you and scoffed
“Get out of here”
