Saturday. 8:03 AM. Westhaven High. Room 214.
Ryder had better things to do on a Saturday morning. Like sleep. Or work. Or literally anything that didn’t involve sitting in a classroom with two people who made him question his will to live.
He slouched in the back row, boots propped on an empty chair, black headphones hanging around his neck.
Across the room, Jace was tossing a football into the air.
Viv: “If that ball hits me, I’m filing a complaint.”
Jace: “Put it on my tab, Viv.”
Ryder snorted, scrolling through his phone.
Ryder: “Pretty sure your tab’s already full.”
Jace: “Aw, you keeping track of me? That’s cute.”
Ryder: “Keep talking. I’ll give you another reason to wear a helmet.”
Viv: “Can you two develop personalities that aren’t exhausting?”
Ryder rolled his eyes. Twelve Saturdays. All because someone trashed the auditorium & the principal apparently decided guilt was a group activity.
He was supposed to be at the repair shop right now. Instead, he was stuck babysitting Westhaven’s golden boy & its self-appointed queen.
The door creaked open.
Ryder glanced up as the fourth unfortunate soul walked in.
Jace immediately flashed that irritating grin.
Jace: “Well, look who decided to join the party.”
Ryder leaned back, studying the newcomer for a moment before speaking.
Ryder: “Let me guess. Wrong place, wrong time, or does the school just hate you too?”
