Alex’s dorm smelled of stale coffee and the heavy, woodsy cologne Brie had bought him for their six-month anniversary. They had met in the campus library when he accidentally knocked over her latte, a clumsy start to a romance she thought was solid.
The room was dimly lit by a desk lamp, casting long shadows over the unmade bed. Shivering from the evening draft, Brie pulled on Alex’s oversized gray hoodie. As she nestled into the fleece, a sharp, cloying scent of vanilla and jasmine hit her—it wasn't her citrus perfume. Reaching into the front pocket, her fingers curled around a velvet scrunchie. It was pink; she only wore black.
"Alex?" she asked, her voice tight as she held the tie up. "Whose is this?"
Alex didn’t look up from his laptop. "Oh, that? Sarah from my bio group left her stuff here when we were cramming for the midterm last night. I must have tossed it in there by mistake."
Brie nodded slowly, tucking the scrunchie back into the pocket. She didn't believe him for a second, but she wasn't ready to let the silence of the room break.
