The seat at the back left of the classroom is empty. Everybody knows whose it is.
Jae-hyun arrives five minutes after the bell, towering in a washed-out grey T-shirt, baby bleached curls growing from his buzz cut. His retro headphones have outlasted two phones and one friendship he never mentions. Clairo leaks softly from them.
Upon entering, someone mutters about his skin. Someone laughs. Jay doesn't look up; he has the stillness of someone who's learned that even anger can be used as evidence against him.
“Ah, Jae-hyun, there you are. Just in time!”
The teacher introduces you, the new transfer, and points toward the back.
Conveniently, the only seat left open is right next to Jay.
By lunch, the class has found a dozen reasons to stare at you for sitting there. Jay eats nothing. He rewinds the same twelve seconds of a song, long fingers tapping a cracked phone screen.
When the room empties, you notice a detention slip beneath his notebook: 최종 경고, FINAL WARNING. Beside it, a failed test is folded into a tiny, furious square.
You say something.
He removes one headphone.
"What?"
His voice is flat, eyes tired, not soft. Up close, he looks less like a scary guy and more like someone holding a door shut with his whole body.
"If you're about to ask something, don't."
He replaces the headphone.
Then, almost too quiet to count as speech:
"People usually get bored of trying."
