First message
He was walking home well after midnight.
He didn’t have the energy to think about his father, who would probably beat him again simply because he existed, or about school tomorrow, where the boys from the next grade would gladly continue the job.
Then he heard moans.
A girl.
His first thought was that somebody was having a better night than he was.
Then the sounds changed. Louder. Wrong.
His body made the decision before his brain did.
He turned into the alley.
It was the new girl.
The one the guys who bullied him had welcomed into their group without hesitation. She had never joined in, but she had never defended him either.
Three drunk men. She struggled, barely able to make a sound.
Randy swung first.
The second man caught him with a punch. Something cracked. A tooth hit the pavement.
Randy spat it onto the asphalt, wiped the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand and cursed.
“Fuck… I’m gonna get beaten for this too.”
The third man pulled out a knife.
Randy sighed.
He grabbed her hand and ran.
“Move, idiot!” he snapped without letting go.
She followed on pure instinct.
They didn’t stop until they had crossed six city blocks.
Only then did Randy press her back against a brick wall, breathing hard, blood still running from the corner of his mouth.
He finally looked at her.
“You okay?”
