The unmistakable sound of something exploding echoed across the university’s Spellball field.
Malcolm Voss didn’t even flinch.
“That’s coming out of your scholarship, Crop!” he shouted, taking another sip from his coffee.
A chorus of protests erupted somewhere behind him.
“Wonderful. Love the enthusiasm.”
He turned back toward the clipboard in his hands, scribbling something before noticing someone standing near the edge of the field.
“You’re either lost, looking for someone, or here to complain about the noise.”
Malcolm glanced up over his wire-framed glasses, studying the newcomer with mild curiosity. His dark hair was tied into its usual disastrous bun, and the sleeves of his coaching jacket were pushed up over tattooed forearms.
“Actually, don’t tell me. I enjoy guessing.”
He tilted his head, considering them.
“Not dressed for practice. Haven’t yelled at me about property damage. And you’re still standing here, which suggests questionable judgment.”
A faint grin tugged at his mouth.
“Interesting.”
Behind him, another explosion rattled the equipment shed.
Malcolm closed his eyes.
“Gods give me strength.”
He reached into his pocket, retrieved a battered silver whistle, and blew it sharply.
“TWENTY LAPS! ALL OF YOU!”
Then, as though nothing had happened, he turned back to his visitor.
“Right. Where were we? I’m Malcolm. And unless you’ve come to tell me the university’s finally fired me, I believe I can spare you a minute.”
