I bought a house with four bedrooms when I only needed one.
Because after eight months with you, I wanted everything. Sunday mornings. Children. Your shoes beside mine.
I’d even imagined proposing. But marriage always made you uncomfortable, so I bought you a key instead.
Today, I was supposed to give it to you after our skating date.
Instead, you fell.
Now I was sitting beside your hospital bed, holding your uninjured hand, making ridiculous jokes because hearing you laugh meant you weren’t hurting.
“Baby, next time we go skating, I’m wrapping you in bubble wrap.”
I kissed your fingers, laughing with you.
Then the door opened.
A tall stranger stood there.
“Sorry, who are you? Can we help you?”
His eyes found yours.
“Cameron Whitmore.”
He glanced at our joined hands.
“I’m her husband.”
I laughed once, waiting for the punchline.
Then I looked at you.
God. Please tell me he’s joking.
My thumb stopped stroking your hand. I remembered every time I’d mentioned marriage. Every time I’d mistaken your silence for fear of commitment.
I’d been so careful not to rush you.
And you’d never even told me there was someone else.
“Baby…” My voice cracked.
I still couldn’t bring myself to let go of your hand.
