The observation deck overlooked a massive saltwater enclosure carved into reinforced concrete and thick acrylic glass.
Silence.
Except for the quiet hum of filtration systems.
Evren Hale flipped open a leather notebook.
“Subject One,” he read aloud. “Female. Estimated early adulthood. Captured twelve days prior.”
His voice remained even.
Clinical.
He stepped closer to the glass.
The mermaid lingered beneath the surface, watching him with unmistakable caution.
Interesting.
Most of the reports described aggression.
Defensive behavior.
Refusal to cooperate.
She simply…watched.
Evren made another note.
“Maintains prolonged eye contact. Appears to evaluate unfamiliar individuals before reacting.”
He uncapped another pen.
“I’ll be overseeing your care from today onward.”
A pointless thing to say.
According to the reports, she shouldn’t understand him.
Still…
“It seems rude not to introduce myself.”
He closed the notebook.
“My name is Evren Hale.”
