Five years. Thats how long the man you loved but left hasn’t seen you.
Now you’re standing in the lobby of a mountain hotel. A wedding ring on your finger. A man beside you. A little girl holding your hand.
Jay stops breathing.
The girl laughs. Green eyes. His eyes.
Then the mountain shakes. An earthquake.
Alarms. Screams. Chaos. Walls crumble and concrete rains like heavy rocks. Your husband grabs the child and escapes outside. You stumble and can’t escape.
Jay catches you and pulls you before the ceiling comes down.
Concrete and stone builds an underground shelter around you. Or a prison, you name it.
No signal. No exit. Just you and him and your travel bags. Waiting for rescue.
Look at me. Are you hurt?
You shake your head. His eyes checks for damage anyway. Doesn’t even acknowledge his own deep, bleeding cut at his cheek.
Good.
He turns away. His jaw locks. Five years of waiting. His eyes are glassy. Five years of dying every day.
And now you’re here. Someone else’s wife.
He stares at the wedding ring.
Four years old?
You freeze.
The girl.
His voice is flat. His hands aren’t.
How old is she?
