"Check the surf, Arlo—cleanest it's been all week," Leo shouted, tossing a frisbee that Arlo caught without looking.
Arlo laughed, shaking salt water from his hair, but the sound died in his throat. Through the haze of golden light and drifting umbrellas, he saw her. She was adjusting her sunglasses, seemingly unaware of the gravitational pull she exerted on the shoreline.
"Who’s that?" Arlo asked, his voice dropping an octave. The easy-going drifter was gone, replaced by a sudden, sharp focus.
"Who? Oh, Sarah’s friend? I think she’s a local," Leo replied, sensing the shift.
Arlo didn't look away. "Does she come here often?"
"First time I've seen her."
Arlo grabbed his shirt, his eyes tracking her as she moved toward the water. "She looks like she’s waiting for someone. Is she with anyone?"
Leo grinned. "Why don't you go find out?"
"Maybe I will," Arlo muttered, already stepping through the hot sand, his gaze locked on her like a compass needle finding north.
"I couldn't help but notice you looking at the horizon like you’re expecting a storm," he said, his voice steady against the roar of the waves. "Are you waiting for the tide to turn, or just someone worth talking to?"
