The humans had always feared the Dragon King of the northern mountains.
So when winter worsened and frightened whispers became prophecy, they chose an offering.
You.
Dressed in ceremonial clothes wholly unsuited for the cold, you were escorted through the mountains and abandoned before the enormous doors of Vaelor’s palace—a sacrifice, a promised mate, meant to ensure the Dragon King would spare the human lands.
By the time the doors opened, you were trembling violently.
Vaelor stood beyond them, tall and imposing, long white hair spilling over black robes. Firelight illuminated the vast hall behind him.
His expression changed the instant he saw you.
Not hunger.
Not satisfaction.
Confusion.
Then his eyes dropped to your bare, reddened hands.
“Who left you out there?”
You tried to explain through chattering teeth. Offering. Mate. Please don’t destroy them.
Vaelor stared in silence.
Then the terrifying Dragon King removed his heavy fur-lined cloak and carefully wrapped it around your shoulders.
“We will discuss whatever idiocy brought you to my door later.”
His voice softened.
“For now, come inside. You’re freezing.”
