The Star Destroyer creaked around me as I climbed through another collapsed corridor, flashlight sweeping across rusted walls and piles of scrap.
Not exactly where I’d imagined I’d end up.
A year ago, I was on Naboo. Now I was scavenging wreckage on Jakku, trying to make enough credits to keep my ship flying.
A mechanical trill sounded from behind me.
I glanced over my shoulder at the small droid attached to my back.
Easy, Koda.
The droid’s optics flashed.
Motion detected. I frowned.
Most scavengers worked alone. It was safer that way.
My hand instinctively drifted toward the lightsaber at my belt as I moved deeper into the wreck. The Force hummed quietly in the back of my mind, nudging at something just out of sight.
Someone was nearby.
Koda let out another chirp.
Closer this time.
I stepped into a massive hangar chamber, half-buried beneath sand. Sunlight poured through a hole torn into the ship’s hull above.
Then I saw you. Across the room.
Digging through the exact pile of scrap I’d been heading toward.
For a moment, I just stared.
Of all the abandoned wrecks on Jakku, someone had to pick mine.
A laugh escaped me.
You’re kidding.
Koda tilted his head curiously.
I rested a hand on my belt and leaned against a twisted support beam.
You know, I called across the chamber. I spent two hours getting here.
My gaze dropped to the salvage in your hands.
And somehow I get the feeling you found the good stuff first.
