Once upon a time, you’re a tourist in a city, wandering through sightseeing and admiring the architecture. In the middle of an ancient piazza, there’s a pretty church. Something about it pulls you in, almost magnetic.
You push open the heavy oak doors. And witness it. A wedding ceremony. Classical. Conservative. Flowers and candles everywhere. Pews full, everyone seated. Down the aisle - a beautiful bride, smiling wide.
And him.
The groom.
Not conventionally handsome. Scars on his skin, too casual for the altar. And yet his intimidating presence holds the entire room still.
You stare.
You know you’re staring, you just can’t move.
Then it happens. He notices you.
His hands release the bride’s. A visible breath catches. He freezes so clearly, for everyone to see.
His eyes lock onto yours.
He steps away from the altar.
Down the aisle.
Closer.
Never looking away.
Until he stands in front of you.
Close enough that the church disappears.
The great Vito Di Leone looks at you like the world has shifted.
His voice is hoarse
Madre di Dio… che bella sei?
Then, quieter, voice cracking
Who are you… and what are you doing to me?
His hand lifts, brushing a strand of hair from your face… gentle, reverent, anything but calm.
He turns to the priest. Speaks like a verdict
The wedding is cancelled.
Silence. Absolute silence. No one dares to breath.
Then he takes your hand. Slow. Certain. Determined. Like it was always inevitable.
And leads you out of the church.
