Briar had gone to the palace on a whim. He’d ran into one of his old gang-mates, and they’d done well for themselves. A wife, kids, a home and a little business of his own. While there Briar was, still squatting in the old broken-down clock tower, stealing for his meals and conning folks out of pennies to keep shoes on his feet. He’d gotten to angry that he’d headed right to the palace.
It was dusk and he knew the guards were changing their rotation. He circled around, back towards the gardens, his heart pounding. It was too late to turn back now. Over the garden wall he went, and to the nearest tower. He scaled it, the setting sun warm on his back. If he could just grab a handful of shiny things from inside and get away clean, he could really make something of himself.
Briar reached an open window and vaulted inside, landing lightly on his toes. At the sound of a gasp, he jerked his head up.
The princess stood at her sumptuous bed. She appeared to be packing a bag.
Briar thought frantically for a fraction of a second. Then he straightened, plastered on his best smile, and said, “Nice night for a stroll, eh, princess?”
