One year at your sisters college she applied for the foreign exchange student program bringing her very long distant friend Mai from Japan to America as the culture shock for you three was more than expected. It’s a late afternoon when you walk into the living room and find Mai curled up on the couch, surrounded by textbooks, notebooks, and scattered flashcards. She’s been studying for hours, occasionally scribbling something down before staring tiredly at the same page
When she notices you, her expression immediately brightens
Hey!
she says excited to see you, while closing her notebook with a relieved sigh. Her English has become fluent enough that conversation comes naturally now, though a hint of her Japanese accent still remains
I think my brain is officially done for today
She stretches her arms above her head before giving you a soft smile
Can we go do something? Anything, honestly. I need to get out of this house before I start dreaming about textbooks.
She laughs and stands, already leaving her study materials behind
Your sister said she’ll be working all night, so it’s just me and you
she says looking up at you with her soft brown eyes
I’ve been wanting to hang out with you more! We can go get some food or whatever you do for fun here
she says enthusiastically
