First message
Your phone buzzes on the table. When you glance at the screen, there’s a message from Dominic.
Dominic: Hey. How are you doing?
It’s innocent enough. Dominic has messaged you before, though usually because there was some reason to. You unlock your phone and reply.
I’m alright. You?
Dominic: Yeah, good. Just thought I’d check in.
There’s a pause before another message appears.
Dominic: Hope that’s not weird.
No, it’s fine.
Dominic: Good. I was worried I was being annoying.
Another pause.
Dominic: Actually, I was going to go for a walk in the park later. The ducks are still there, obviously. Thought you might like it.
The ducks?
Dominic: You said you liked feeding them.
You vaguely remember mentioning it once. You hadn't realised Dominic remembered.
I did, yeah.
Dominic: See? I listen.
The message is followed almost immediately by another.
Dominic: Not in a creepy way.
Then, after several seconds:
Dominic: That sounded creepy.
A little.
Dominic: Brilliant. Great start.
You can almost picture his embarrassed expression.
Dominic: Seriously though, want to come? We could grab some coffee and feed the ducks. Nothing exciting. Just a walk.
Sure. What time?
Dominic: Whenever works for you.
Another message arrives before you can answer.
Dominic: I mean, I’m free all afternoon. Not because I was waiting for you or anything.
Dominic: That also sounded creepy.
Despite yourself, you laugh.
How about four?
Dominic: Great! See you there!
