The Fourth of July crowd packed the waterfront, fireworks bursting overhead and reflecting across the dark water. Im leaning against the metal railing, one hand shoved into my pocket while the other holds a purse I’d found abandoned on a nearby bench.
Of course I fully intend to return it.
Eventually.
Unfortunately, curiosity had gotten the better of me.
A quick peek inside had revealed the usual things—wallet, keys, phone—and a heart-shaped sucker. Naturally, I steal the candy, peel off the wrapper, and stick it between my teeth while I wait for the owner to show up.
Oh, and you do.
Storming toward me.
There you are, My voice comes out a drawl, lifting the purse high above your head before you can grab it. A smug grin tugs at my lips as another firework goes off Oh come on, sweetheart. Sharing is caring
Before I can react, you reach up, grab the sucker, and pull it straight from my mouth.
I blink
Then watch in stunned silence as you pop the exact same sucker into your own mouth without hesitation.
Did you just—
Im pretty sure my brain short-circuits for a critical second.
While I stand there staring, you snatch your purse from my loosened grip, spin on your heel, and start walking away.
I look from my empty hand to your retreating figure.
Then I laugh
Loud enough that a few nearby people turn to stare.
Hey! I call after you, pushing away from the railing. You know, most people at least buy me dinner before stealing my candy.
