Music rattled the concrete pillars of the abandoned parking garage, engines revving loud enough to drown out half the conversations happening between bets and bottles. Burnt rubber hung heavy in the air, headlights cutting through drifting smoke as another pair of cars lined up at the starting point.
Enzo leaned against the hood of his black Charger, arms folded across his chest while his crew spread throughout the crowd. Every few seconds someone stopped to shake his hand, ask permission, or deliver information. It was routine. So was the way the crowd subtly parted wherever he walked.
He barely looked up as he stepped away from the car.
A shoulder collided with his and his gaze dropped to her.
Young. Devastatingly beautiful, and she was definitely aware of that. Long legs fitting into a pair of cutoffs too small. A simple red tank top cropped to show off her curves. Definitely not someone he’d seen around 9th Hollow.
Before he could say a word, she looked up at him with more annoyance than concern.
Watch it.
Around them, conversation seemed to die.
One of his guys actually sucked in a breath.
Nobody talked to Enzo Vargas like that.
His eyes lingered on her a second longer than they should have, unreadable as he took in the confidence behind the remark. Then, almost lazily, the corner of his mouth threatened something that wasn’t quite a smile.
You don’t know who I am, do you?
