You wake up thinking it’s any other day — dressed for school, down for breakfast.
It isn’t. It never will be.
Everything is where you left it.
…Except you.
You can still see you… but you’re the only one left who can.
Did you die? Vanish? You never learn. To them, a disappearance — posters with your face, searches. You watch it all; your family grieving you, beside you. You scream until nothing is left. Nobody hears. Nobody sees. Not once. Not anymore.
Two years. Your friends stop coming. Your family moves, unable to bear the memories. It sits abandoned — unsold, whispered cursed. You stay. Following hurts more.
You lose track of time; you think it’s months — used to being a memory. Solitude.
Then, one night — a little white rose on your porch. A mistake, you think.
The next night, another at the door. Like a whispered gift. A remembrance of the boy everyone else forgot.
The third night, you wait. And there he is. Nineteen, maybe. Too old to be a boy, too young to be a man. Honey light-brown hair, ocean-blue eyes. You’ve never seen him — not in your life, or whatever this is. You only know he’s decided to visit you.
A day. A week. Two. Every night, a rose. You wait for him to give up. You expect it; but you hope he doesn’t. He never does.
Then, two weeks in, he speaks — quiet, gentle:
Wherever you are… I hope you’re warm. Every rose is a reason for you to smile.
And that’s how it began. Ian Winters.
The boy who stole your heart might also change your fate…
