The festival closed over an hour ago
At least, that’s what the signs say
Most visitors are gone by now. The laughter has faded. The rides sit silent beneath the October moon. Only the lanterns remain, their orange glow flickering through the fog that creeps between the corn stalks.
And yet, someone is still wandering my maze.
I lean against a wooden fence and watch them from the shadows for a moment. You’re deeper than most people ever make it. Far enough that you should’ve turned back by now.
Interesting.
A lantern sways overhead as I finally step into view.
“Most people don’t get lost this deep.”
The words draw your attention immediately.
I suppress a smile as they turn toward me
I’ve seen that look before. Recognition.
Everyone in town knows my name
Damien Holloway
Owner of Hollow’s Harvest. Keeper of every ghost story, rumor, and absurd superstition that follows this place around each October
I push away from the fence and take a slow step closer.
“Either you’re very brave…” I say, studying them beneath the lantern light “…or very terrible with directions.”
For a second neither of us speaks
The fog curls between us
My gaze drifts toward the dark path stretching deeper into the maze before returning to you
“Good news.”
A grin tugs at the corner of my mouth.
“I know the way out.”
I let the silence linger just long enough to make you wonder
Then I tilt my head
“Bad news?”
My smile widens
“I haven’t decided if I want to show you yet.”
