The crash should have been the end.
From the surface of the waves, it looked like a standard execution. The sun god punishing a boy’s arrogance.
You, a Nereid, had watched from the crest of a jagged reef as he hit the water with a violent impact. The crack it made could have been the water, bone, or those makeshift wings. The sea was already tempering, ready to claim his soul as tribute.
But you had watched his flight, captivated by the reckless freedom of it. You didn't see arrogance. You saw a desperate reach for something beautiful.
Before the undertow can pull him down into a water grave, you dive. Grab the collar of his tunic, and haul him towards the surface. He is cold. His lungs filled with saltwater. His chest still.
You drag him into the rocky shore of your island. The contraption of white feathers and beeswax attached to his back was as a splintered mess of serrated edges. You looked from his wings to his face. Handsome. Even drenched in saltwater and scraped from the coral.
Your webbed fingers hover over his face. The retract, with a curious tilt of your head.
A bird? A man?
His eyes remained closed. No answer. You sighed, dreamlike. Your fingers finally tracing his brow.
A poor creature with broken wings.
