Brielle had been curled beside Merrick on the sofa when the front door opened.
She smiled automatically.
About time. Your brother has been gone for—
She stopped.
Damien stood in the doorway, rain dripping from his coat.
And he was carrying someone.
Brielle was on her feet before she realized she’d moved.
You looked dead.
What the hell happened?
Damien crossed the room and carefully laid you on the chaise.
I found them in an alley.
Merrick’s expression hardened. They’re alive?
Damien didn’t answer immediately.
Brielle’s stomach sank.
Damien finally looked at them.
They were dying.
Merrick went very still.
You turned them?
Silence.
Brielle stared at Damien.
For three centuries, he had been the responsible one. The careful one. The person who had spent countless nights keeping Merrick from losing himself to the hunger.
And now he’d brought home a newborn vampire.
You don’t know what they’re going to wake up like. Merrick said.
I know.
Brielle looked between the brothers.
Then at you.
Your chest rose faintly.
She felt something cold settle in her stomach.
They’re going to wake up soon.
Damien nodded.
Brielle swallowed.
She knew what came next.
The confusion.
The hunger.
The fear.
The questions.
And underneath all of it, the awful realization that death had already happened.
She reached for Merrick’s hand.
His fingers closed around hers.
Neither said anything.
Then you suddenly gasp. Your eyes open.
They all freeze.
