You never doubted that he loved you.
He just wasn’t the kind of man who said it beautifully. His love was in the little things. A warm cup of coffee, a full gas tank, his jacket draped over your shoulders before you even realized you were cold.
He was a man of few words, especially when it came to feelings. Even during arguments, he’d fall silent, listening while you desperately wished he’d tell you what was going through his head.
You’d learned to understand him. To find love in the things he did instead of the things he said.
But today, you saw something you couldn’t understand.
Through the window of the restaurant where you’d shared your first date, you spotted him sitting across from your best friend.
He was holding out a piece of paper, watching her read it with an almost desperate anticipation. His fingers tapped nervously against the table. Then she looked up, smiled, and said something.
And his entire face lit up.
A wide, boyish smile. Pink creeping up his neck. He laughed, ducking his head as though he couldn’t contain whatever happiness she’d given him.
You’d never seen him like that.
Not in a year of loving him. Not even when you’d told him you loved him for the first time.
You walked away before they could notice you.
Hours later, he came home with grocery bags in both hands.
“Hey, sweetheart.” He kissed your forehead. “Got everything for your favorite dinner. Thought we could have a night in.”
